The Art Weekend São Paulo was created in 2016 by the ABACT (Brazilian Association of Contemporary Art) to bring the audience closer to the visual arts. The event is open and free, promoting an enabling environment to share artistic movements, learning and casual meetings.
In a single weekend, the participating galleries expand their working hours and offer activities specially designed for the occasion: exhibitions, guided visits, talks with artists and curators, performances, video show, among other.
Since 2017, in order to organize a more diverse event, the Art Weekend has promoted an activity in which galleries from São Paulo host temporary shows by galleries from other regions of Brazil – Galleries Welcome Galleries.
Besides, the project takes an important step in 2019 and presents a new public program: art workshops for students from public schools, guided tours through the city – including sign language tours – and a talks program.
A private non-profit organisation created in 2007, the Associação Brasileira de Arte Contemporânea – ABACT (Brazilian Association of Contemporary Art) is currently comprised of more than 40 art galleries in the primary art market, representing seven Brazilian states and the Federal District, directly involved in developing the careers of over a thousand artists. Recognising the fundamental role that contemporary art plays in the construction and dissemination of a modern image of Brazil, ABACT has taken on the mission of expanding cultural exchange, promoting activities to professionalise and reduce bureaucracy in the market, while fostering dialogue and education surrounding the contemporary art industry in Brazil, placing value on the different stages of production and those responsible. In partnership with Apex-Brasil, ABACT has managed and operated the Latitude Project since April 2011.
